South Africa customs rules for household goods and personal effects shipments:
Household and personal effects may be imported into the Republic of South Africa duty free for immigrants, and returning residents (who have been out of South Africa longer than six months) and temporary residents.
Temporary Residents will only be allowed duty-free importation if they are in possession of a valid temporary work permit.
The owner of the shipment must be in South Africa at least 15 days prior to the arrival of the shipment in order to start the customs clearance process, as documents have to be handed to customs 10 days prior to the arrival of the vessel.

Permanent residence documents or Temporary residence Permit and work permit
